Iva M. Hess, 96, a resident of Bickford Cottage, Marion, Iowa died on Monday, April 3, 2006.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 6, from 4 to 7 PM at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Memorial service will be 10:30 AM on Friday, April 7, 2006, at Marion Christian Church by Rev. Robert Kunz. Arrangements are by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion.
Surviving are four daughters: Rosalie (Norman) Severinsen of Macomb, Illinois; Diane (Morris) Allen of Marion; Nancy (Jim) Lang of Iowa City; and Patricia (Harry) Wullschleger of Home, Kansas; a son, Thomas (Nancy York) Hess of Robins, Iowa.; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob, who died April 20, 2002, her parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
Iva Marguerite Comport was born Feb. 23, 1910, in Osakis, Minnesota, to Christopher and Rosa Millen Comport. Her family moved to Marion in 1919. She graduated from Marion High School in 1928, and married Robert M. Hess on August 12, 1929, at her parent?s home in Kenwood, IA. Iva was devoted to her husband and raising their children. They also opened their home and hearts to others in need as foster parents for seven years.
Iva was an active member of the Marion Christian Church for over 75 years and an energetic participant in civic groups in Marion, including Marion Independent School Board member, PTA, Marion Mother?s Club, Eastern Star, YMCA, Senior Citizens, volunteer at Granger House, and Past 60 group. Sewing for others gave her great satisfaction for many years. Iva always sought opportunities to help others. Bob and Iva took great pride in the Marion Community, recently contributing two park benches placed in the City Square.
Her grandchildren fondly recall "Grandma's Button Box" and are making a button string in her honor. All are invited to bring a button to add to the chain.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Marion Christian Church.
