J. R. “Red” Carley, 81, of 2685 25th Ave. Marion, died at home, Monday, March 9, 2009, after a very brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009 at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City, by Rev. Nick Needham. The family will greet friends at 9 a.m. before the service in Central City. A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City.
Red is survived by his son, Steve (Barbara) Carley of Burt, Iowa; two grandchildren, Brett (Danielle) Carley of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Lori (Ryan) Miller of Algona; three great grandchildren, Karly, Meredith, and Alex Miller. Also surviving are his brothers, Jack (Jean) Carley of Marion, and Floyd (Eileen) Carley of Emporia, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; daughter, Mary Carley; sisters, Betty Paine, and Margaret Campbell.
Red was born April 15, 1927, in Newton, Iowa, to Floyd and Faye (Varguson) Carley. He married Mildred Johnson on October 13, 1945, in Anamosa. He owned a local canned milk route and later a refined fuel delivery service. Red also drove a school bus for Central City Community School and, during this time, became a member of the Central City Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member for 26 years, acting as chief for 22 years. Red moved to Marion in 1973, and became manager of the T.B.A. Center, later to become refined fuel manager. He became General Manager of the Linn Co-operative Oil, and worked there until his retirement in 1990.
