Jack Ray Butler, 81, of Marion, died Thursday, September 23, 2004, at St. Luke?s Hospital, following a short illness with cancer. Services: 1 p.m. Monday, September 27, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Nick Longworth. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Inurnment: Wilcox Cemetery in Viola with military honors.

Survivors include his son, Larry G. Butler and wife Dottie of Mechanicsville; his daughter, Linda Swanson and husband Ron of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Mary Cameron of Austin, Texas; two step-brothers, Wayne Larson of Cedar Rapids and Rayford Larson of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Craig Butler and wife Sarah of Muscatine, Krisan St. John of Columbia, Maryland, KeliJo Bieber and husband Barry of Anamosa, Stacie Osako and husband John of Cedar Rapids and Tim Swanson of Chicago and his special friend, Chalise Hite, a student at UNI; and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Sienna Bieber.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; and a step-sister, Norma Merridith.

Jack was born July 15, 1923, the son of Delancey and Gladys (Merrill) Butler in Anamosa. On June 11, 1942, he married Lois Anita Lundeen in Kahoka, Missouri. She died on April 13, 2000. He served with as a tank driver with the U.S. Army 94th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre during WWII. Jack was a longtime member of Asbestos Workers Union Local No. 81, retiring in 1985. He worked for Select Auto in Marion until shortly before his death. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion.

Jack was a great car enthusiast and enjoyed time with his family and his friends at the Legion Club.
