James Jay Borschel, Sr., 89, of Anamosa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at his daughter’s home in Cordova, Illinois. A private family graveside service will be held at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
James was born on April 27, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Kenneth Spencer and Mabel Bell (Shannon) Borschel. Raised in the Cedar Rapids and Marion areas, he graduated from Franklin High School, before enlisting with the United States Navy in 1955. He spent nearly three years stationed in Guam, proudly serving his country before returning home.
James married the love of his life, Carole Bunney, at the United Methodist Church in Marion. He went on to co-own and operate Ken Borschel and Sons Construction alongside his father, earning a strong reputation in the community for nearly two decades. Later, he transitioned into a successful career in lumber sales management, overseeing operations in both the Quad Cities and Phoenix, Arizona, until his retirement in 2001. James returned back to Anamosa in 2006. He was a longtime member of the El Kahir Shrine and the Scottish Rite Temple. James was also a devoted fan of Iowa Hawkeyes football and wrestling, as well as the Chicago Cubs.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
James is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, James J. Jr. (Carol) Borschel of Robins, Iowa, Kathryn K. (Bill) McCorkle of Cordova, Illinois, and Steven J. Borschel of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Pat (Connie) Borschel of Caryville, Florida; and his beloved “Damn Cat”, Bunney, who he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and beloved wife of 63 years, Carole Jean Borschel.
