James Douglas Lockett, Jr., 77 of Cedar Rapids passed away on July 19, 2016 following a brief illness. Visitation will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 153 Cherry Hill Rd. N.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Thursday, July 28 from 11:30a.m.-2:00 p.m., with the service immediately following at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his father James D. Lockett, Sr., his mother Vivian L. Lockett, and his brother Jerry L. Lockett.
He is survived by his wife Judith Lockett of 54 years of marriage; his three children Julie (Lockett) Schmidt, James Lockett, III and Scott Lockett; eight grandchildren, Daniel Lockett , Nicolas Van Wieren, Adam Van Wieren, Cameron Lockett, Cacie Lockett, Jason Van Wieren, Andrew Lockett, and Lily Schmidt; his sister Nan (Lockett) Marlin; by son-in-law Robert Schmidt; and daughter- in-law Kriston Lockett.
Jim was born in Kirksville, MO on October 16, 1938, and grew up in Keokuk, Iowa. He attended the University of Missouri, where he studied math and physical education and played for the Missouri Tiger basketball team. He married Judith Ann (Goe) Lockett on November 19th, 1961. They moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where Jim taught at McKinley Junior High School and coached boy’s basketball at Washington High School. He then returned to the University of Missouri and earned his Master’s degree. Jim and Judy returned to Cedar Rapids and Jim taught math and PE and coached at Jefferson High School until his retirement in 1998. He coached basketball, tennis, and swimming. He also served as a swim instructor for 60 years. Jim was inducted in to both the Jefferson High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the Teacher Hall of Fame. He continued coaching swimming and teaching at the YMCA until shortly before his death.
Jim loved music and performed in the Cedar Rapids Follies, the Community Concert Choral, and the musical group “Just For the Fun of It. Jim and Judy have been members of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for nearly 46 years where he was involved in many musical activities involving adults and youth.
Jim touched many lives and will be dearly missed.
