Jim was born the son of Henry and Agatha (Hoeger) Schulte on March 29, 1927 in New Vienna. As a boy Jim attended the country school near his home. As a young man, he was scouted by the Cleveland Indians baseball team before being drafted into the United States Army Infantry in 1951. Jim served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1952. On January 31, 1953 Jim was united in marriage to the love of his life, Phyllis McElligott, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan. Jim was a farmer and worked for over 20 years at Henderson Manufacturing in Manchester and was a self-employed painter until the time of his death. His passion was leaving his brush strokes on the homes and buildings of his many friends and neighbors all throughout Delaware and surrounding counties.
Jim was a proud member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan and the Ryan American Legion Post #692. He will be remembered as one who dearly loved his family, friends and neighbors and the home in which he lived since boyhood. Jim loved golf, playing bridge with friends and neighbors, the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and most especially loved being surrounded by his family.
Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis Schulte of Ryan; four children, Mary Virginia and husband Tom Schwartz of Dubuque, James Charles and wife Sharon Schulte of Alburnett, Elizabeth Anne and husband Randy Benesch of Walker, and Regina Anne Schulte of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren, Erin and husband Mike Hansen, Christopher, Michael and Bridget Schwartz, Ann, Jessica and Mary Ellen Schulte, and Ryan, Katie, Meghan and Patrick Benesch; two great-grandchildren, Blake Benesch and Thomas Hansen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
