James E. Sweet, 79, of 261 28th Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, in his home, following a heart related illness. Services: 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with military honors. Services conducted by Rev. Ed Powers. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 9, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his sons, Gary (Roberta) Sweet of Cedar Rapids and James (Kim) Sweet of Atkins, Iowa; six grandchildren, Robert Sweet, Sheila Ward, John Sweet, Aron Sweet, Ashley Sweet and Danielle Sweet; two great grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Sweet of Irving, Texas; and two sisters, Phyllis Paulson of Des Moines and Margaret Hutton of Cedar Rapids; and his dog, Snoopy II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, brothers, Earl Sweet and Phillip Sweet; and sisters, Marjorie Knapp, Ruth Dutcher and Alice Sweet.
James was born August 12, 1927, in Central City, Iowa, the son of M.C. “Mike”and Neomie (Hanna) Sweet. On March 8, 1949, he married Lennie Hiatt in Roseville, Michigan. She died in 1988. He served in the Air Force during WWII and flew in a B29 around the world three times. James worked for Quaker Oats.
James was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed walking his dog, fishing and camping. He also liked working outside doing yard work and watching his grandchildren play sports.
