Jeanne Ellen Skalsky-Carter, 70, of Marion, died Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Mercy Hallmar Care Center, Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 6:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a later date.

Jeanne is survived by her husband, Dan Carter.

She was preceded in death by parents and sister, Judi Skalsky.

Jeanne was born to Rose Elizabeth (Turecek) and Milton H. Skalsky on June 14, 1944, during WWII. She graduated from Jefferson High School as part of the National Honor Society with a DAR award for essay entry and an Elks Leadership Scholarship. Jeanne went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in 1966 with majors in French, Art History, and Fine Arts Education. She taught in Fresno, CA, Buffalo, NY, and Marion, IA. Jeanne spent a year in Paris studying at the Alliance Francais and the Ecole de Louvre. She studied art restoration, art history, French, German, and print making while holding a work study tuition fellowship at the Hoover Museum. Jeanne work at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in 1998, where she was a Docent.

Jeanne married Daniel Milton Joseph Carter in 1983 after a three year engagement. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Cedar Rapids Public Schools and studied as she worked as a Horticulturist at Kirkwood Community College and ranked in the upper 3% of the college. Jeanne designed several hand-made quilts and linens and wrote an unpublished journal which contained many prints and watercolors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to an organization of the donor’s choice in Jeanne’s memory.
