Joan Harnagel, 88, of Marion, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids assisted the family.
Joan was born on February 10, 1937, in Hot Springs, the daughter of Charles and Midget (Pond) Young. She graduated from Hot Springs High School and went on to attend Chadron State College in Nebraska. On November 19, 1960, Joan married James Otto Harnagel in Vermillion, South Dakota. She worked as a legal administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration until her retirement in 2002. Joan was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion, Iowa. She loved crocheting afghans and cherished her time at Summit Point in Marion. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff there for their kindness and care.
Survivors include her children, Jeanne (Larry) Isaacs of Hiawatha, and James (Liz) Harnagel Jr. of Eagan, Minnesota; grandchildren, Craig, Robert, Joel, Austin, and Alexa; great-granddaughter, Charlotte; sister, Edna Gilbert; and brother-in-law, William Harnagel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Midget Young; husband, James Harnagel; and sisters, Corliss Calhoun, Bonnie Zink, and Betty Heinrich.
