Joey Sumner

Joey Sumner, 60, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, August 20, 2026. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life will follow from 2 to 6 p.m. at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a time of sharing beginning at 2 p.m.

Joey was born August 2, 1966, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Janet (Foster) and Edwin R. Sumner Sr. He graduated from Metro High School. Joey married the love of his life, Wendy Lynn Meueler on March 16, 2012, in Cedar Rapids. He worked in groundskeeping at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital and proudly served in the National Guard. Known for his kind and generous nature, Joey was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a special place in his heart for his beloved animals, Max, Baby, and Squirt. Of all the things in his life, nothing brought Joey greater pride than his three children. He was incredibly proud of each of them.

Survivors include his children, Robert David Sumner, Michael Temple Sumner, and Whitney Jo Sumner (Shermain Mosley); his grandchildren, Kole Sumner, Irie Sumner, Lilith Sumner, Emma Lynn Sumner, Amaya Sumner, and Journey Sumner; his siblings, Edwin Sumner Jr., James Sumner, and Tracy J. (Mickey) Stuefen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wendy Sumner; and his brother, Albert Eugene Sumner.
