John Heitmann Jr., 86, of Center Point, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, Iowa. Celebration of Life: 4 – 8 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point.
John was born June 14, 1931, in Aliceville, Kansas, the son of John Sr. and Matilda (Penn) Heitmann. On November 5, 1949, John married Roberta “Midge” Abernathy in New Hampton, Iowa. He was a custodian for the Cedar Rapids Schools and also worked with the stadium crew until he retired in 1993. John was passionate about pigeon racing. He was a member of the Central Fantail Club and American Pigeon Racing Union. John loved to travel with Midge and they would “go for a ride” and hit three states in one day. He also enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren.
John is survived by his children, Cindy (Bob) Mingo of Center Point, Richard “Rick” Heitmann of Manchester, Roberta “Bert” Heitmann of Center Point, and Terry (Paul) Letts of Center Point; six grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Midge in 2000; his parents, John Sr. and Matilda; brothers, Cecil, Virgil, Earl, and Norbert Heitmann; and sister, Lorraine Williams.
