John F. Meyer

John F. Meyer, 87, of Fairfax, Iowa, joined his beloved wife in Heaven on Monday, August 31, 2026, at his home. A Graveside Service will be held September 19, 2026, at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fairfax, Iowa, with military honors. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow the graveside service from 2:30 – 5 p.m. at the Fairfax American Legion Post 572.

John was born on October 8, 1938, in Vinton, Iowa, the youngest son of Albert and Adeline (Boisen) Meyer. After he graduated from Dysart High School, John served his country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1958 – 1962. On April 30, 1966, John was united in marriage to Edith “Edy” Showman in Cedar Rapids, with whom he shared her 5 children then they added Michelle in 1968. He worked for Cherry Burrell (International Paper) for 37 years, in the earlier years he also worked at the Sinclair Gas Station, across from Cherry’s. He met Edy at a diner she worked at in 1965, they were introduced by one of their friends, and it is all history from there. He was a member of the Fairfax American Legion Post 572, he enjoyed lovingly caring for “Haven Hill”, their legacy to their family, after they both retired, they traveled to see family, they liked to go to the casino together. John enjoyed classic cars – especially his red 1966 Mustang Fastback he had when they met-then traded in for a wagon once the new addition was added, his Jaguar, he also loved western movies, traveling with his family, camping and spending time with all the young people of the family. They recorded many of their favorite times with many photos! He loved to reminisce about the “good ole” days and give you a history lesson here and there about the family. It was nice to hear those stories that you may have forgotten, but he wanted you to remember.

Survivors include their children, Michelle Burhite (Jay) of Cedar Rapids, Allan Richardson (Dawn) of Michigan, and Monica Claman of Wyoming; sister, Joyce Klein; 9 grandchildren, Jason (Kacy), David (Stazia), Matthew, Ryan (Brooke), Johnathan (Ariel), Christopher (Brittani), Chelsea (Andrew), Zachary (Mikayla), Heather (Gill); 20 great-grandchildren, Shaun, Gavin, Noah, Lily, Aiden, Jaden, Ronan, Sutton, Noah Ryan, Teyton, Calen, Leighton, Kaelynn, Brad, Scarlett, Lillyth, Winston, Colston, Peggy-Sue, Bella; 2 great-great-grandchildren; Neveah and Clarence II; and Cousin “Sis” Beverly, many cousins, Nieces Wendy and Julie (Jared), and son-in-law, Ron Frett.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Adeline; wife, Edy; brothers, Wayne and Stanley Meyer; children, Deidre Frett, Laura Nicola, and Michael Richardson; brother-in-law, Ron Klein; nephew, Brian Klein; his beloved dog, FeFe; and many friends and family that he is reunited with now.
