Joseph F. Wachal, 96, of 5842 Fairchild Road, Walker, Iowa, died Saturday, December 10, 2005, in his home following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at the Walker United Methodist Church, Walker, Iowa, by the Rev. Al Milligan. The family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Walker, Iowa. Burial: Walker Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Warren Wachal, of San Jose, California; a daughter, Willa (Irvin) Serbousek, of Walker; two granddaughters, Valerie (Serbousek) Williams and husband, Charles of Atkins, and Jill (Serbousek) Limkemann and husband Mark of Coggon; one grandson, Gary Wachal and wife, Kristin of Carlisle, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Benson of Vinton; and special family friends, Raymond, Betty and Joseph Simenstad of Nisswa, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion (Carns) Wachal in 1977; his parents; one brother, Jacob and sister, Martha in infancy; and two sisters, Irene Washburn and Marian Heins.

Joseph was born June 2, 1909, in Walker, Iowa, to Frank and Mary (Dvorak) Wachal. He married Marion Carns on April 4, 1933, in Cedar Rapids. He was employed as a mechanic in Center Point until his marriage, and then started farming on the same place for 60 years, retiring in 1975.

He was a board member and deacon of the United Presbyterian Church and Walker United Church, and later joined the Walker Methodist Church. He was also a rural school director until Walker consolidated.
