Joyce Mae (Steadman) Brown, 73, of Village Ridge Assisted Living Center, Marion, Iowa, died there Friday, August 31, 2007, following a long battle with cancer. Services: 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Bill Harnish. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette, Iowa.
Survivors include her children, Cinda and Michael Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Howard Brown and Cindy Raspiller of Mt. Vernon, New Hampshire, Richard Brown and Kelly Lundgren of Cedar Rapids and Julie and Joe Crozier of Cedar Rapids; eldest grandson, Aaron Schulze and his wife, Kim Hotchkiss; grandchildren, Sarah Szumita, Nicholas, Liam and Morgan Brown, Rachelle Brown, Savannah Brown, Christopher Brown, Elijiah Brown and Nathan Crozier; great-grandchildren, Damion Schulze, Kaitlin and Kaden Hotchkiss, Caleb Brown, Madison Szumita and Hailey Studt; sisters Betty Bellon of Fairfax, Charlotte and brother-in-law Ken Brown of Toddville; her brother, Robert and his wife Marlene Steadman of Hiawatha; special niece, Nancy Africa; and sister-in-law, Jane and Dick Grapes of Cedar Rapids. Joyce was blessed with many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donovan Eugene Brown in 1988; her beloved grand-daughter, Emily Kaye Brown in 1987; her brother-in-law, Howard Bellon earlier this year and brother-in-law Howard O. Brown.
Joyce was born October 18, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Lovena (Kessler) Steadman. She attended Wilson and Franklin Schools and was a lifelong resident of this area. On October 20, 1953, she married Donovan Brown in Kahoka, Missouri. They shared a lifelong love and raised five children together. Joyce was known for her wonderful cooking, her close-knit family and her love of camping. Her family was her life.
Memorials may be made in Joyce’s memory to St. Luke’s Hospice, 1026 A Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.
The family would like to thank the staff at Village Ridge, Hospice of Linn County and St. Luke’s Hospital for all they did to make Joyce’s final days more comfortable.
