Julie Ann Schmitt

Julie Ann Schmitt, 54, of Marion, Iowa, died Friday, August 14, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with a rosary beginning at 3:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Julie was born October 6, 1971, at Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana, to Michael and Sandra (Weber) Alt. She graduated from Linn-Mar High School and went on to earn her degree from the University of Northern Iowa. On May 28, 1994, Julie married Robert Joseph Schmitt at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion.

Julie was a stay-at-home mom to her kids and grandchildren. She served as a Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader, as well as a devoted seamstress helping with band, show choir, and theatre costumes for Xavier Catholic Schools. Julie worked at Linn-Mar as a student support associate with special needs children. Julie was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served as a team lead for St. Joseph Fun Days, was active with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, played in the Bell Choir, and volunteered with Bridgehaven.

Julie is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) of 32 years; parents, Michael and Sandra Alt; son, Jacob (Madeline) Schmitt of Johnston, Iowa; daughters, Abigail (Jacob) Long of Marion, Iowa, Bridget (Charles) Walter of Plymouth, Minnesota, Elizabeth (Wesley) Jansen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Roman Schmitt, Samuel Schmitt, Rosemary Long, Theodore Long, Blaise Long, and Leopold Jansen; siblings, Daniel Alt, Theresa Alt, Jeffrey Alt, and Brett Alt; mother-in-law, Therese Schmitt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerry (Kay) Schmitt, Barb Vsetecka, Steve (Debby) Schmitt, Joan (Dale) Beckman, Cathy (Chad) Kuboushek, Dorothy (Gene) Elsbernd, Margie (Tim) Murray, Marie (Gary) Elsbernd, Joe (Katie) Schmitt, and Jim (Teri) Schmitt; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Roman Schmitt; and brother-in-law, Leon Vsetecka.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and disbursed to charities Julie supported.
