Leo L. Hayes, 85, of Central City, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, where the family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial: Center Point Cemetery, Center Point.
Survivors include his children, Ruthann Goble of Machesney Park, Illinois, Claude “Jim” (Karen) Hayes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Raedean (Mike) Ryan of Waukon, Iowa, Marty (Debbie) Hayes of Center Point, Iowa, and Bianca of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gene and Emmett; and two sisters, Frances and Rosemary.
He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Billy, Dale and Leonard; and a son-in-law, Don Goble.
Leo was born April 19, 1923, the son of Frank and Rose (Malley) Hayes, in Decorah, Iowa. In 1954, he was united in marriage to Claudean “Susie” Anderson in North Liberty, Iowa. She died in 1985. For many years, Leo worked as an iron worker for the Iron Workers Local 89. He also worked at Hayes Salvage Yard. Leo will be remembered for his humor and his Irish spirit.
