Leo J. Smith, 79, of 3011 Woodland Drive S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday February 16, 2007, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from complications of C.O.P.D. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at Immanuel Baptist Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Dan Wiersema. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Leo loved all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren very much. Survivors include his children, Ted (Linda) Smith, Bonnie Cook, Dixie Stumpff, and Andy Smith; grandchildren, Ted (Lisa) Smith, Tracy Simmons, Tiffany (Aaron) Miller, Matt (Melissa) Hoyle, Gretchen Hoyle, Aaron Hoyle, Jennifer Cook, Jillian Cook, Amber Cook, Nick Stumpff and Chris Stumpff; great grandchildren, Jason Smith, Justin Simmons, Madelyn Miller, Logan Miller, Michael Hoyle, Matthew Hoyle, Madelyn Hoyle, Mackenzie Vasquez, J.T. Vasquez, Katelyn Vasquez, Kaylie Hoyle, Zach Hoyle, Austin Hoyle, Vanessa Hoyle, Devery Cook, Damara Pryor, Daelynn Pryor, Rylee Coleman and Alexah Cook; sister, Pat (Don) Lagerquist of Cedar Rapids, special kitty, Callie and grandpup, Bud.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Billie; and his daughter, Nancy Hoyle.
Leo was born August 20, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Leo and Helen (Donisthorpe) Smith, Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy SeaBees in WW II in the Philippines and China. On September 14, 1946, he was united in marriage to Billie Ramsey. She died July 7, 1996. Leo was a Teamster for 40 years and drove for Carstensen Freight Lines for 36 years. Leo was an avid outdoorsman and appreciated wildlife.
Leo was an active member for Immanuel Baptist Church and a faithful disciple of Christ. He was loved and respected by his family and many friends.
