Leslie Carl Liabo, 82, of Marco Island Florida, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully of complications of diabetes and leukemia with his family at his side on Thursday May 4, 2006. Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2006, at the First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids, 361 17th Street S.E. by the Rev. William Jameson. The family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service at the church. A reception at the church will immediately follow, with burial at the Cemetery in Center Point, Iowa, at 2:30 P.M. with military honors.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years the former Doris Elliott. Also surviving him are his sons, Mark of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Rand of Naples, Florida, Mark?s wife, Corenne and their children, Jeremy Erica, Miriam, Rand?s children, Tom, Erin, Chad and Mike, and his three sisters, Jean Oxley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Darlene Bohling of Center Point, Iowa and Patricia Andersen of Syracuse, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Carl Liabo and Edna Liabo of Center Point.
Leslie was born on June 27, 1923, in Center Point, Iowa, and married Doris in 1949. He attended the University of Iowa, earning a BA in Business and served with the Third Army in Europe during WW II. Leslie was the second of a four generation tradition of Liabo?s graduating from the University of Iowa.
In 1947, Leslie began working for the Iowa Milling Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, becoming the general manager of the soybean operation. In 1964, Leslie oversaw the construction and start-up of Corn Starch and Syrup Company in Cedar Rapids. After the sale of the company to Cargill, Inc., Leslie became head of the corn processing division of Cargill. In 1970, Leslie led a group of investors building Corn Sweeteners in Cedar Rapids, serving as the company?s president and then as a division president of Archer Daniels Midland Company after Corn Sweeteners was sold to ADM.
Leslie joined American Maize Products Company in 1973 becoming its vice-chairman and president at its corporate headquarters in Stamford, CT. He retired to Marco Island, Florida in 1984.
