Leslie “Les” Hamilton Smith, 81, of Marion, died Saturday, June 13, 2015, after a short illness, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha with his wife, family, and friends by his side. Funeral Services: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2015, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion with Military Honors.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen of 40 years; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Norris and Frank Blaser; sister-in-law, Barbara Smith; sister-in-law, MaryAnn Gray; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Florene and Lee Kopecky; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Geraldine Norris and Louise Blaser; brother, Richard Smith; brother-in-law, Arlyn Gray; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Amy and Eugene Dvorak.

Les was born April 3, 1934, the son of Dewitt A. and Maree (Greer) Smith at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Marion Public Schools. Les was a Seabee, serving with the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. He was stationed in the Philippines for 2 years and in Alaska for 1 year. Les retired from Quaker Oats in 1990, after working there for 16 years. Prior to that he worked in construction and was an auto mechanic. In his younger years, Les enjoyed scuba diving at Devil’s Lake and Lake Michigan.

On May 3, 1975, he married Eileen Seeland in Cedar Rapids. After retiring, Les and Eileen traveled extensively in their motor home in the United States and Canada. They spent the winters in Mission, Texas. Les enjoyed boating, gardening, golfing, and motorcycling. Les was a craftsman, designing and creating wood projects. He was always glad to help family and friends.

Les attended First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and First Presbyterian in Mission, Texas. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion and Meadow Creek in the Valley Golf League.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff of Mercy ICU and Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, or First Congregational Church, Cedar Rapids.
