Mardean L. (Joyce) Holveck, 95, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the First Christian Church in Center Point by Rev. Dr. Robert Kunz. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Center Point Cemetery.

Mardean is survived by her three children, Carolyn and Michael (Jacalyn) of Cedar Rapids and Randall (Jane) of Madison, Wisconsin and her two grandsons, James (Laura) and Robert Holveck of Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother Jesse Jr., and her parents.

Mardean was born October 18, 1914, in Center Point, Iowa, to Jesse and Caroline (Schmickle) Joyce. At age seven, she began studying piano. She played the trumpet in the high school band. For a high school graduation gift, Mardean received a xylophone on which she performed for many occasions. She exchanged the xylophone for a marimba and continued to perform.

She graduated from Coe College in 1937 with a degree in music. She taught music in various public schools in Iowa. She met Forrest Holveck in Zearing, Iowa, and they were married in Ft. Worth, Texas, in December, 1945. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1946 where she gave private piano lessons for over 40 years.

Mardean was the past director of Mu Phi Epsilon (a professional music fraternity) and the past president of the local alumni chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon. She was a member of Beethoven Club, College Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She conducted sing-a-longs in three local nursing homes, volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital, and was a rock’n reader at Garfield Elementary School. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Center Point, Iowa, where she directed the choir for five years.

Besides music, Mardean enjoyed sewing, reading, and cooking and being with her dogs, Sophie and Roz.
