Our beloved mother, Marion M. Schmidt, 85, of Delhi, went to be with her Lord and Savior in Paradise on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 12, 2007 at the Delhi United Methodist Church by Pastor Lorraine Hartman and Pastor Julie May. Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville and one hour before services Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi.
Marion was born September 8, 1922 on the family farm south of Delhi, the daughter of William and Bertha (Streblow) Schnittjer. She graduated from Delhi High School in 1939, from Lenox College in Hopkinton in 1941 and from the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport in 1942. Following graduation she was employed by the John Deere Co. working in both Moline, Illinois and Dubuque. On March 23, 1947 she was united in marriage to Russell D. Johnson. Marion and Russell were the parents of two children, Marcia and William when he passed away at the early age of 31 following a stroke in 1951. After his death, Marion moved with her children to Manchester and on September 7, 1952 she married Elmer G. “Bill” Schmidt at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Their family expanded with the births of two more children, Ricky and Laurie. Marion worked as a homemaker until her children were older and then worked at the Delhi Savings Bank alongside her husband until 1975. She was an active member of the Delhi United Methodist Church and served as President of the Hannah Circle for many years. Those who knew Marion knew she loved the Lord and shared her love with everyone around her.
Marion’s passions included loving her children and grandchildren, playing cards with family and friends, knitting, quilting and visiting on the phone.
Marion is survived by her four children, Marcia Lux of Bend, OR, Bill Johnson of Portage, WI, Rick Schmidt of Austin, TX and Laurie (Randy) Kramer of Delhi; two granddaughters, Sydney and Elise Johnson of Portage, WI; her good friend, Sharla Smith, who called her faithfully every day; and Pumpkin, the resident cat who stayed by her bedside until her last breath.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William & Bertha Schnittjer; her husbands, Russell Johnson and Bill Schmidt; and her sister, Maxine Palumbo.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be directed to the Delhi United Methodist Endowment Fund or the Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars.
We would like to express our thanks to Dr. Jane Hartnett for her loving care and to the staff of the Good Neighbor Home for being so attentive to our mother’s needs.
