Maurice W. "Mitch? Mitchell, 85, of 2390 27th St., died Monday, April 10, 2006, at St. Luke?s Hospital, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2006, at First United Methodist Church in Marion by Rev. Mike Morgan. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Springville Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Zereta; their children, Bill (Charity) Mitchell of Springville, Bob Mitchell of Marion and Kay (Ken) Stanford of Marion; a son-in-law, Dave Saari of Hiawatha; a sister, Bessie C. (Bassett) Klopp of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Karen Saari.

Mitch was born July 23, 1920, the son of Curtis and Nettie (Sheets) Mitchell in Marion. He graduated from Springville High School in 1937 and attended Coe College where he was active in the R.O.T.C. On June 18, 1941, he married Zereta Port in Lancaster, Missouri. Mitch worked as a custodian and bus driver for Linn-Mar Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1985. He taught boiler operation at Kirkwood Community College and had also farmed in Central City, Springville, and Marion areas for many years.

Mitch had a wonderful sense of humor and played many, many practical jokes. He will be remembered for his kindness and his great support of education. Mitch enjoyed woodworking and had a great appreciation for nature. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, Marion Fire Department or the Linn-Mar Foundation in Mitch?s memory.
