Maurice “Maurie” R. Vandewalle, 84, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Visitation: 5 – 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the funeral home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Vandewalle; his children, Terry (Claudia) Vandewalle of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kevin Vandewalle (Angela) of Marion, Maureen (Mark) Newton of Hiawatha, and Tim (Maggie) Vandewalle of Chattanooga, Tennessee; grandchildren, Shaun, Brandon, Jennifer, Travis and Collin; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene (Eileen) Vandewalle; and one sister, Lorraine (Nick) Andrews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Maurie was born March 26, 1932, to Richard and Mary Ann (Mahoney) Vandewalle in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. After graduating from Creighton Prep School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving in the Korean conflict. During his time in the service, he married Darlene Wilson on August 1, 1953, in Omaha, Nebraska. After being honorably discharged, he then went to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Maurie began working for Rockwell Collins as an engineer and ended his career as an International Marketing Manager in 1992. Upon retirement, he turned his attention to wood carving, a hobby that quickly grew into a passion. He served as Co-Chairman for the Cedar Valley Wood Carving Shows for several years. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing and photos that were captured on his wildlife camera. Maurie especially loved spending time with his family at their cabin in Lake Dehli. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Maurie’s memory.
