Melvin Thomas Simoens

Melvin Thomas Simoens, 94, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, September 10, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Melvin was born on June 17, 1932, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Gladys (Snyder) Simoens. He graduated from Wilson High School and went on to work for FMC Corporation and the Duane Arnold Energy Center for a combined 35 years before retiring in 1994. Following his retirement, Melvin and Donna spent eight years serving together as crossing guards at Hoover Elementary School.

Survivors include his children, Terry Simoens (Janelle Dietz) of Durant, Iowa, Michael (Jackie) Simoens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Krista Thompson of Van Horne, Iowa, and Keith (Kim) Simoens, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tiffany (Jonny) Lympus, Travis (Jaynee) Thompson, Briana (Jason) Steffens, Ryan (Megan) Simoens, Tyler (Alison) Simoens, and Kelsey (Daylis) Deutsch; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Rose Shaver;

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Simoens; his parents, Andrew and Gladys Simoens; his brothers, Donald and Robert Simoens; and his sister, Viola Toureen.
