Muriel R. Maurer, 89, of Manchester died Monday, December 15, 2008 following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Manchester by Rev. David Weber. Family will greet friends from 4 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 17 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.

Muriel was born January 19, 1919 rural Manchester, the son of Martin and Etta (Nieman) Maurer. He graduated from the Manchester High School in 1936. On September 14, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bessie C. Kennedy at the Manchester United Methodist Church. The couple farmed and raised Shorthorn cattle near Manchester until retiring to Manchester in 1980.

Muriel was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing horseshoes and attending the local high school athletic events.

Muriel is survived by his wife, Bessie Maurer of 62 years; one son, Randy (Marla) Maurer of Manchester; two grandchildren, Devin (Kacie Turnis) Maurer of Ankeny and Megan Maurer (fiance Jeremey Ferden) of Cornelius, NC; one great-granddaughter, Ella Maurer; one sister, Marietta (Ben) Johnson; one brother-in-law, Raymond Nodurft; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Cocking and Emma Kennedy; and many nieces and nephews.

Muriel was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Etta Maurer; two brothers, Nieman Maurer and Evlon “Lefty” Maurer and two sisters, Elma Platt, and Marjorie Nodurft.
