Neil Lloyd Vauthrin
March 24, 1936 — February 21, 2011
Neil Lloyd Vauthrin, 74, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, February 21, 2010 in St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado of a heart attack. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 5 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids. The family will receive friends from 4 pm to 7 pm at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, Iowa on Friday, March 4.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter, Jill (Brian) Vauthrin Brand of State Center, Iowa; a son, Jeremy Jonathan Vauthrin of South Lake Tahoe, California; two grandsons, Tyler Vauthrin Brand and Sean Robert Brand; a sister, Joyce Knutson of Ellsworth, Iowa; sisters –in-law and brothers-in-law, Lynda and Carl Schnebbe of Belle Plaine and Wade and Jerri Allen Swindle of North Liberty, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Mike Knutson.
Neil was born March 24, 1936 in rural Melbourne, Iowa, the son of Horace and Alma (Oler) Vauthrin. He graduated from Melbourne High School and Iowa State University. On August 5, 1967 he was united in marriage with Janet Iva Swindle at Silver Creek United Methodist Church, rural Ryan, IA. His family was a top priority in his life. Neil especially enjoyed traveling all around the country with them. Each summer he would scout out a different National Park or Forest for family camping. In earlier years Neil especially enjoyed biking and participated in several RAGBRAIs. As his health declined he found satisfaction in spending time at the Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA. For many years he volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital. He had a special passion for theater and sought sites throughout the US and Canada where he could see works of Shakespeare performed. He was a long-time member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and Compass Class.
