Norma Jean Hicks, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Northbrook Manor Care Center, Cedar Rapids. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019, at Marion Christian Church, Marion, conducted by Reverend Peter Mitchell. The family will greet friends from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service on Friday at the church. A Committal Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn. Norma was born January 17, 1929, in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Hazel (Hall) Clayton. She graduated from BGM High School in 1946. On June 5, 1948, Norma was united in marriage to Jack Hicks at his parents’ home in Brooklyn. Norma was a member of the Marion Christian Church since 1950, where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years and volunteered many years within different committees. She also volunteered for over 20 years at the Flower Stall in St. Luke’s Hospital. Norma will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Laurie (Ron) Butler of La Porte City, Steve (Deb) Hicks of Cedar Rapids and Jo Ellyn Hook of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jacquie (Scott) Mathenia, Bonnie Carter, Ashley Hicks, Casey and Mason Hook; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Miller and Isabella Shepherd; three step-grandchildren, Rhonda (Mitch) Estling, Rebekah (Tom) Vetter and Christopher (Louise) Butler; and seven step-great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kaleb and Mason Vetter, Owen and Leo Butler, and Kennedy and Charlotte Estling.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; one daughter at infancy, Jacqueline; three sisters, Phyllis Thornburg, Marjorie Smith and Joan Anderson; and two brothers, Max Clayton and Bill Clayton.
