Orville C. Wellman, 83, of Earlville, died Monday, October 1, 2007 at the Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois following complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. on Friday with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.

Orville was born February 21, 1924 in Dubuque, the son of Guy O. and Florence M. (Udelhoffen) Wellman. He attended St. Joseph’s school and graduated from Earlville High School in 1941. Orville joined the Army Air Corps during WWII where he served as a bomber pilot and flight instructor. On July 17, 1946 Orville was united in marriage to Josephine L. Frost in Montgomery, Alabama. The couple settled in Earlville where they operated Wellman Produce and Wellman 7 Coves at Lake Delhi. Orville worked for the Iowa Department of Agriculture from 1974-1986.

Orville was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a 63-year member of the American Legion Post #436 in Earlville. He served as president and was a founding member of the Lake Delhi Recreation Association. Orville enjoyed fishing and being at the cabin with his friends and family.

Orville is survived by two children, Norman J. Wellman of Earlville and Joyce (Raymond) Kessenich of Crofton, MD; three grandchildren, Brandon Wellman of Earlville, Joshua Kessenich of Crofton, MD and John Kessenich of Tallahassee, FL; a brother, Gene R. (Sandee) Wellman of Stoddard, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents, Guy & Florence Wellman; his wife, Josephine Wellman; and two brothers, William and Lloyd Wellman.
