Peter D. Johnson, 74, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Radiant Church in Cedar Rapids, with Pastor Rick Gail officiating. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Peter was born February 9, 1952, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Harold and Frances (Shove) Johnson. After his parents divorced and his mother, Frances, passed away, he was raised by his paternal aunt, Agnes McClain. Peter graduated from Central High School in Davenport, Iowa, before going on to serve honorably in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1976. On August 23, 1997, he married Maria Elizabeth Escobar in Center Point, Iowa. Peter worked in software quality assurance with the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) in Cedar Rapids until his retirement in 2018.
Peter was a devoted member of Radiant Church. He shared his passion for Kung Fu by both practicing and teaching at the Bruce Taekwondo Academy in Marion, Iowa. In his free time, Peter enjoyed canoeing, camping, gathering around bonfires, grilling, reading, and spending evenings stargazing on his deck.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Johnson of Cedar Rapids; his daughter, Stefani Johnson of Cedar Rapids; his stepchildren, Emely Montoya (Orvin Peralta) of Georgia, and Gabriela (Bryon) Palmer of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Jacob, Sofia, Hailey, Alden, Kellan, Zidane, and Johan; his sister, Sara Olson of Iowa City; his brother, Victor Johnson of Iowa; many cousins, including his special cousins, Larry and Joyce Kurtz of Waverly, Iowa; and his dog, Scruffy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Agnes Johnson; his sister, Kelly Johnson; and his dog, Orrie.
