Peter E. VanDenBerghe, 101, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 19, 2019, at his home. Visitation: 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2019, Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2019, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to Mass. Burial: Saint John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Peter was born December 15, 1917, in Wethersfield, Illinois, the son of Edmond and Marie (VanHecker) VanDenBerghe. He graduated from Wethersfield High School. Peter was united in marriage to L. Irene Thompson on July 6, 1940, at St. Joseph Church in Kewanee, Illinois. He worked for 36 years as a manager for A&P Tea Company. He enjoyed fishing and collecting and shelling black walnuts. In his younger years Pete participated in football, basketball, track and baseball. After high school he went on to play in a men’s basketball league. Pete loved to read and was incredibly dedicated to his job.

Survivors include his children, Cherie (Nick) Bane of Florida, Jan Bertch of Cedar Rapids and Tricia VanDenBerghe of Lucerne, California; grandchildren, Tami (Roger) Viernow of Rock Island, Illinois, David (Laina) Lambert of Vancouver, Washington, Michael (Kym) Lambert of Ft. Valley, Georgia, Chris Bertch of Frederic, Wisconsin, Michelle (Jon) Bovenkamp of Muscatine, Jason, Derek and Ziree Bertch all of Cedar Rapids, Lucian VanDenBerghe-Lank of Lakeport, California; great-grandchildren, Halie, Joe, Arek, Alix, Abigail, Nathaniel, Nicolette and Caitlyn; and great-great-grandchild, Kylie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond and Marie; wife, Irene; brother, Arthur VanDenBerghe; and sister, Florence Ache.
