Robert J. Schillig, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed into eternal life on the morning of Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Marion, Iowa. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at St. Pius Catholic Church, located at 4949 Council Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, with visitation one hour prior. Private family inurnment will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Robert (Bob) was born on December 27, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, to Ralph and Philomena (Stodola) Schillig, and grew up with his two brothers. He was united in marriage to Carol Pape at St. Matthew Catholic Church on October 11, 1958. Bob and Carol were married for 63 years and raised three children.
Bob graduated from Franklin High School, then attended the University of Iowa. He then joined the United States Air Force, he served in the 69th Pilotless Bomber Squadron, based in Cape Canaveral, Florida. After returning home, Bob worked at Collins Radio (Rockwell) and then became an independent insurance agent with Slavia Insurance Agency. Bob then retired in 1987.
Bob and Carol were charter members of the St. Pius Church and active members of the Model A Club and AACA Club. They went on many antique car tours and loved to travel. Bob restored and collected many antique cars and loved to show them at car shows. He even restored one in their basement and built a custom airboat. Bob loved spending time with the grandkids, giving them rides in the old cars and telling them tall tales.
Bob is survived and lovingly remembered by his three children, Barbara Kurtz, Julie (Gary) Raymond, and David (Charlotte) Schillig; five grandchildren, Carolyn (David) Gordon, Elizabeth (Theodore) Isbel, Fr. Tyler Raymond, Haley (Andrew) Brundell, and Willow Schillig; seven great-grandchildren, Noah, Isla, Lucy, and Wells Gordon, and Lila and Roman Brundell, with baby Brundell due in November.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; parents; and two brothers, Chuck and Gary.
