Robert L. Bruner, 86, of 1117 Harold Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, of complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Services with military honors, 12 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Deacon Jerry Pettit. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Carolee; his children, Roger (Clara) Bruner, Gary Bruner, Janet Davidson, all of Cedar Rapids, Ronald (Judith) Bruner of Ely, Lloyd Russell “Russ” (Deb) Bruner of Victor, Barbara of Cedar Rapids, Brian (Lorrie) Bruner of Amana, and Kristine Bruner of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Helen Bruner of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis; three brothers, James, Harold and Charles; and two sisters, Sarah Pedersen and Helen Brietski.
Robert was born May 8, 1922, the son of Burt and Harriett (Gorton) Bruner, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II. On August 20, 1946, Robert married Phyllis Sumner. She died January 6, 1985. On February 27, 1989, he married Carolee Dietiker-Schulte. For over 40 years, Robert was a serviceman at Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids.
Bob was a sentimental guy who had a strong work ethic and a great sense of humor. His work took him to 63 countries and 48 states. Bob enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards and most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was a lifetime VFW member and a 50+ year member of the Local Machinist Union 831.
