Robert J. Melendy
October 3, 1933 — April 13, 2006
Robert J. Melendy, 72, of 1702 14th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Parker Knoll. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Private burial at a later date at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; one daughter, Teri (Bart) Hemesath of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Erica McDaniel of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Dixie (Andy) Cirkl of Robins and Nadine (David) Hauskins of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three nieces; four nephews; and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marilyn.
Robert was born October 3, 1933, in Iowa City, the son of Hollis and Margaret Melendy. He was a Cedar Rapids resident all his life except for 2 years which he spent in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at Allis Chalmers, Pennick & Ford, worked as a roofer and later as a machine mechanic at Westdale Bowling Center. He retired in October of 1995 after 22 years of service there. On December 23, 1983, Bob married Lorraine Horn in Cedar Rapids.
Bob was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He loved gardening, flowers, and animals, especially cats, which he had several of during his lifetime. He also was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. Bob was a good handyman whether it be carpentry or fixing machinery.
