Sophia "Sophie" Marie Pionek

Sophia "Sophie" Marie Pionek, 26, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 6, 2026, leaving behind a family, school, and community forever changed by her kindness, compassion, and unwavering belief in others. Though her life was far too short, Sophie's influence reached far beyond the classroom. She inspired, encouraged, and uplifted countless students and colleagues through her genuine heart, quiet strength, and steadfast commitment to education.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family encourages guests to dress in florals or purple, Sophie's favorite color. Sophie was born on June 21, 2000, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Donald Pionek and Andrea Dunn. A lifelong learner, she graduated from Jefferson High School with the Class of 2018 before earning her bachelor's degree in History with a secondary education endorsement from Cornell College in 2022. At the time of her passing, she was continuing her pursuit of excellence by working toward a Master of Arts in Teaching at Morningside University.

Teaching was more than a profession to Sophie, it was her calling. As a social studies teacher at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, she approached each day with enthusiasm, patience, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student who entered her classroom. She believed every young person deserved to be seen, heard, encouraged, and challenged to become their very best. Her classroom became much more than a place to learn history; it was a place where students found acceptance, encouragement, laughter, and a safe place to simply be themselves. Her colleagues knew her as a kind and generous educator whose passion for teaching was evident in everything she did, and whose quiet compassion left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Sophie shared her gifts well beyond the classroom as coach and advisor for Washington High School's Academic Decathlon, Amnesty International, and theater department. She celebrated the successes of her students as if they were her own and found immense joy in helping them discover their talents and confidence.

The performing arts played a meaningful role throughout Sophie's life. She sang in children’s choirs in elementary school and participated in theater productions in middle school, electrifying the audience as the Red Queen in 8th grade and more. She played the cello from sixth grade through college, participating in orchestra for many years. During high school, she was a member of the theater set-building and stage crews and performed in the pit orchestra for the production of Fiddler on the Roof. She even learned a new instrument so that she could participate in marching band with her friends. She also treasured her time as a member of the Jefferson High School Academic Decathlon team. At Cornell College, she earned a position in the Writing Studio tutoring students and was a member of the Social Media team helping document activities on campus using her love of photography.

Outside of school, Sophie found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed crafting, delighted in collecting Calico Critters, and treasured quiet moments spent with her beloved cats. Above all else, however, she cherished her family. The love she shared with those closest to her was the foundation upon which she built her life, and those bonds will forever remain among her greatest legacies.

Those left to cherish Sophie's memory include her mother, Andrea Dunn; her father, Donald (Kari Hettich) Pionek; her brother, Daniel Pionek (Rachel Pickup); her maternal grandfather, James Dunn; her paternal grandmother, Shirley Pionek; her aunts and uncles, Michael (Jennifer Cuske-Dunn) Dunn, Patty (Troy) Halbur, Richard (Lana Marian) Dunn, Mary Ellen Panzer, Louise (David) Wetmore, and Michael (Deb) Pionek; along with many cousins, dear friends, fellow educators, colleagues, and the countless students whose lives were forever touched by her kindness, guidance, and belief in them.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Barbara Dunn, and her paternal grandfather, Andrew Pionek.

Sophie's legacy is not measured by the years she was given, but by the lives she enriched. She reminded those around her that kindness matters, that every person deserves to be valued, and that learning can change lives. While her absence leaves an immeasurable void, the compassion she shared, the confidence she instilled, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Academic Decathlon, Amnesty International, or Theatre Department at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, or to the Iowa Humane Alliance.
