Thomas J. Hartley, 89, of 11707 C Street Rd. SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, September 3, 2007, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 7, 2007, at Shueyville United Methodist Church, Shueyville, Iowa, by the Rev. Tom Carver. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Shueyville Cemetery, Shueyville, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Inez; daughter, Linda (John ) Hey of Slater, Iowa, and their children Gina, Nathan and Carly Hey; son, Terry (Laura) Hartley of Galesburg, Illinois, and their children Bo (Nicole) Hartley, Samantha and Zachary; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Kyleigh, Hannah and Isabella; and a sister, Helen (Ken) Johnson of North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and five sisters.
Born June 6, 1918, in Cedar County, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Loma (McDorman) Hartley, he married Inez Witousek on February 6, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII receiving a purple heart in the Pacific Theater. Thomas was a farmer, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Shueyville United Methodist Church, the Ely American Legion Post #555, College Community School Board and the Fairfax Fidelitas Masonic Lodge #364. Thomas was an avid Hawkeye fan, enjoyed woodworking, fishing, visiting with people and was a special friend of Bill W.
