Verla M. Boyens, 79, a resident of Bickford Cottage, Marion, died there Friday, February 16, 2007, after a short illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 19, 2007, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon, by the Rev. Mark Gefaller. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday. There will be a visitation from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Graveside service: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Crawford Heights Cemetery, rural Denison. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin of Marion; three children, Kelvin Boyens and Kevin (Susan) Boyens, both of Marion, and Karla Kesselring of Council Bluffs; and six grandchildren, Mike, Ryan, Jennifer, Steve, James and Michael.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Glen and Darrell Clingenpeel; two sisters, Genevieve Estle and Nathalia Coston; and two grandchildren, Angel Boyens and Angela Kesselring.
Verla was born June 22, 1927, in Castana, Iowa, to Lester and Matilda (Westphalen) Clingenpeel. She was united in marriage to Melvin Boyens on April 10, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Before her marriage, she owned Verla?s Clip & Curl in Dow City. In 1959, Melvin and Verla moved to Upper Palisades, then Cedar Rapids, Lisbon and finally to Marion. She was well-known to many school children as she worked in school cafeterias at Taft Middle School in Cedar Rapids, Mt. Vernon Middle School and Starry Elementary in Marion, retiring in 1999. Verla was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon, where she was active in the Priscilla Guild.
