VERLA M. HILBERT, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at the Hiawatha Care Center following a long illness. Per Verla’s wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, Iowa.
Verla was born October 15, 1914, in Broadview Montana to Silas W. and Elsie (Heverly) Eller. She moved to Center Point, Iowa in 1928 and graduated from Center Point High School in 1932. On November 22, 1933, she married Lincoln LaRue Hilbert in Austin, Minnesota. He died December 23, 1975 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Verla was employed at John Hancock Insurance Company Cincinnati, Ohio for over 30 years. After retiring in 1984, she moved to Cedar Rapids. Verla was a member of the First Christian Church of Center Point.
Survivors include her brother, Beryl (Loreen) Eller of North Fort Myers, Florida; her sister, Thea Leslie of Cedar Rapids; her niece, Nancy (Wayne) Lang of Centerport, New York; and her grand-niece, Brooke (John) Britton, D.V.M. of New York City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Thomas Condon, (who helped raise her); her husband; a brother-in-law, Roger Leslie; and a grand-nephew, Michael Lang.
Verla’s family is most appreciative of the wonderful loving care that has been provided for her during the past eight years while she has been a resident at the Hiawatha Care Center.
