Vernon J. Cornwell, 83 of Earlville died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the
United Parish Church in Earlville by Rev. Dr. Jean Rabary. Family will greet friends from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 7 at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Earlville and one hour before services at the church on Thursday. Burial with military honors will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.

Vernon was born March 21, 1926 in Edgewood, the son of Vernon W. and Martha (Heines) Cornwell. He attended school in Dundee and Manchester. Vernon helped his dad in the coal yards prior to joining the United States Army in 1944. He served on the Tank Destroyer Barta in the South Pacific. On December 6, 1943, Vernon was united in marriage to Irene M. Hutchinson in Manchester. The couple moved to Earlville in 1958. Vernon worked at Wilson Packing in Cedar Rapids as a cook for 29 years, retiring in 1989.

Vernon was a member of the Manchester VFW Post #6637. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed reading, puzzles, and writing. Vernon was a very loving caregiver of his beloved daughter, Linda.

Vernon is survived by seven children, Karen K. (Donald) Reittinger of Manchester, Rick (Lolly) Cornwell of Delaware, Brenda K. Letts (William Young) of Manchester, Michael Cornwell of Earlville, Rhonda K. Cornwell of Earlville, Rodney (Jeannine) Cornwell of Lamont and Linda K. Cornwell of Earlville; three sisters, Vi Koehne of DeCater, IL, Joyce Hradek of Davenport, and Betty Jean Jones, of Monticello; one brother, Donald (Louise) Cornwell of Atkins; a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Cornwell of Lamont; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Cornwell in 2006; his parents, Vernon W. and Martha Cornwell; a son, Terry in 2006; a brother Richard Cornwell; and a sister Gladys Riddle.
