Vernon E. Fay, 75, of 204 8th Avenue in Hiawatha, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2008, at Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha by Rev. Fritz Mellberg. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-three years, Irene; his daughter, Christine (Serdar) Tas of Berkley, California; his son, Kevin Fay of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Luella (Bill) Sloan of Newton and Clarissa Trammell of Fulton, Missouri; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, J.C. Heiserman; and two brothers, Charles and John Fay.
Vernon was born February 24, 1933, the son of Morris and Donna (Eliot) Fay in Troy Mills. On August 1, 1955, he married Irene Nelson at Prairie Chapel Church in rural Marion. Vernon served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Quaker Oats for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1995.
Vernon was a member of Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha and the Cereal Workers Union. He was a volunteer on the Hiawatha Fire Department for many years. Vernon enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Vernon’s memory.
