Vernon L. Horak, 78, of Springville, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with heart disease and pneumonia. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Springville Presbyterian Church by Pastor Karen Downey Beals with military honors. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; son, Rusty (Becky); daughter, Diane (Steve) Jensen; grandchildren, Alan (Sarah) Horak, Tracy (Tom) Feldmann, Ben (Melissa) Jensen, and Melissa Jensen; extended family, Giselle Antonelli; step-grandchildren, Chad and Jennifer Streit, Craig Streit, and Tim and Bridget (Streit) McWhorter; great-grandchildren, Emily and Mitchell Horak, Abby and Gabe Feldmann; step-great-grandchildren, Andrew and Evan Streit and Kassandra and Mackenzie McWhorter.
Also surviving are a brother, Milton (Delores) Horak; sister, Evelyn (George) Dlask; brother-in-law, Don (Shirley) Turecek; many nieces and nephews; and long-time special friends, Jan and John Minzenmeyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Norbert.
Vernon was born August 10, 1927, the son of Joseph and Tillie (Barta) Horak in Ely, Iowa. On April 30, 1950, he married Shirley Turecek in Shueyville. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. Vernon was a longtime farmer, farming for 56 years. The first eight years at Central City, the rest were spent in Springville. He dearly loved the land and spent hours just driving around checking crops. Vernon served many years on the Linn County Pork Producers and sold Crows Hybrid Seed Corn for thirty years. Vernon, along with his son, Rusty and grandson, Alan, formed Triple H Hay Farms to preserve the soil for future generations.
Vernon served his church as an elder, trustee, and on the building committee. He will always be remembered as the "Grill-Master?. Vernon?s greatest love was talking to people. Vernon played Santa for the City of Springville for thirty-five years. He also enjoyed wood working in his shop.
We would like to thank all the nurses on the CCU at Mercy Medical Center. A special thank-you to Dr. Payvandi for thirty years of wonderful care. You were more than Dad?s doctor, you were his friend. Special thanks to Pastor Karen for all you have done. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.
