Viola "Vi? M. Young, 86, of Manchester, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Manchester United Methodist Church by Rev. Jill Mack. Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Manchester and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Vi was born December 6, 1920 to Katherine (Fehring) and Edward Bergmann on a farm near Waverly in Bremer County, Iowa. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in a country church at Spring Fountain near Sumner, in 1934. Vi graduated from Sumner High School in 1938. Viola taught in rural schools in Bremer County for a few years. She married Lewis A. Young in Waverly, on January 19, 1946. The couple lived in the Tripoli vicinity for a number of years before moving to the Earlville and Manchester area in 1952. Vi was employed as a waitress for many years and also worked at Bud?s Super Value for 15 years. In 1984, she retired to Manchester Manor in Manchester where she continued to do volunteer work in various capacities and was associated with the Volunteer Driving Authority for about 10 years.
Vi was a member of the Earlville Methodist Church from 1953-1963 and has been a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church since 1963. She liked working with plastic canvas and composing poems written from her heart. Vi loved gardening and flowers. Her grandchildren were a great source of pleasure to her, laughing, playing games and always being there when they needed "grandma.?
Vi is survived by two daughters, Joyce Ridenour of Cedar Rapids and Marilyn (Kenny) Behm of Alliance, NE; one son, Keith (Carol) Young of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Elna Kuecker of Tripoli; plus a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine & Edward Bergmann; her husband Lewis Young in March 1974; a daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Young in infancy; a great-granddaughter, Tiana Dawn Pohlman as an infant; and a sister, Clara Bergmann.
