Wanda Wilson, 100, passed away peacefully August 24 at the Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 29, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home at 520 Wilson Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids. Interment will take place at the Lafayette Cemetery near Alburnett.
Wanda was born September 20, 1924, in Fort Worth, Texas, the second of four children born to Frank and Jo Grethen (Jarnigan) Cox. She graduated from high school in Austin, Texas, and attended Abilene Christian College and the University of Texas. On February 23, 1946, she married Calvin Wilson of Toddville, Iowa, they eventually made their home in Marion and moved to the Meth-Wick Community in 2005.
Wanda was the first female employee at the Marion Post Office, starting in 1961 as a part time window clerk and advancing to Assistant Post Master, retiring as Superintendent of Postal Operations in 1984. After retiring she volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital for 30 years.
Wanda is survived by two children, Connye (David) Vyverberg of Newnan, Georgia, and Douglas (Lorie) Wilson of Altoona, Iowa; two grandchildren, Matthew (Stephanie) Vyverberg of Dunwoody, Georgia, and Bejamin Vyverberg of Fort Myers, Florida; two great grandchildren, Luke and Anna Vyverberg, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin; her parents; all of her siblings; one nephew and one niece.
