On Thursday, May 25, 2006, William J. "Bill? Sloan, 56, of 3098 1st Ave., Marion, was welcomed into the loving arms of his heavenly Father in Heaven, after a long term battle with cancer. Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion, Iowa, by Pastor Ernest Nicholas, with military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Friday (June 2.)

Bill is survived by his wife, Kayla (Kay) and his son, Kevin, both of Marion. He is also survived by three brothers, Alan (Carol Ann) of Omaha, Nebraska, Steve of Cedar Rapids and Chuck (Diane) of Sun Lakes, Arizona; a brother-in-law, David (Donna) of Des Moines; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Darryl; his mother, Nellie; and his stepfather, Vernon Miller, who his mother married after the death of his father.

Bill was born April 3, 1950, to Darryl and Nellie Workman Sloan. He grew up in Laurens, Iowa, the youngest of four brothers and graduated from Laurens High School in 1969. Bill attended United Technology Institute in Des Moines for a year before enlisting in the Navy. He served in the Navy during Vietnam from 1970 - 1976 as an ET2 on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise. Bill started as an electronics technician at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids in September 1976, spending the last twenty years as a printed circuit designer.

On May 20, 1978, he married Kayla (Kay) Haman and on April 9, 1979, they welcomed a son, Kevin, into their lives. In 1983, Bill and his family started attending Ellis Park Church of God, where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman all of his life, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Chapter of Fraternal Order of Eagles, the V.F.W., and American Legion Post 298 of Marion, which will provide military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ellis Park Church of God or Hospice of Mercy.
