Zatha M. Skeries, 93, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester following a brief illness.
Funeral Services for Zatha will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 19, 2008 at the Manchester Community Congregational Church by Rev. Kurt Pasko. Family will greet friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 18 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa and one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Zatha was born August 11, 1915 in Tripoli, Iowa, the daughter of Harry F. and Gertrude (Gunsalus) Schmidt. She graduated from Tripoli High School in 1932. On February 18, 1934, Zatha was united in marriage to Ewald O. Skeries at the Congregational Church in Tripoli. The couple lived most of their married life in Manchester. Zatha worked in various retail stores and a West Delaware Grade School hot lunch.
Zatha is a member of the Community Congregational Church in Manchester, a life member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the Pythian Sisters, where she served as Grand Chief. Zatha enjoyed bowling, serving as president of the city bowling association and secretary of different leagues for many years. She went to many state and national bowling conventions and tournaments, yearly attending the Courier Tournament in Waterloo. Zatha also taught knitting and crocheting classes. Zatha earned many ribbons at the fair entering her handiwork. She will be remembered for her handi-works. Zatha loved having her family and grandchildren around her. She will be greatly missed.
Zatha is survived by her four children, David (Wanda) Skeries of Vinton, Douglas (Vera) Skeries of Cedar Rapids, Jolene (Dick) Koch of Manchester, Daniel (Connie) Skeries of LaClaire, and; one son-in-law, Don Wall of Manchester; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Naomi Stumme of Tripoli, Betty Hill of Tripoli, and Helen Walker of Johnston.
Zatha was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Gertrude Schmidt; her husband, Ewald Skeries of 53 years; one daughter, Janet Wall; a great-grandson, Noah Rodriquez; four brothers, Dale, Donald, Robert, and Richard Schmidt; and one sister, Colleen Claypool.
